Water Advisory Board Chair to appear before Housing Committee

18 Sep 2018, 13:40

The Chair of the Water Advisory Body (WAB), Mr Paul McGowan, will appear before the Joint Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government tomorrow, the 18th of September.

“Appointed by Minister Eoghan Murphy in June, Paul McGowan is tasked with leading the WAB in its work to improve the transparency and accountability of Irish Water,” said Housing Committee Chair, Maria Bailey TD.

“The Committee will wish to question Mr McGowan on his long-term strategy for the advisory body, as well as his thoughts on how water infrastructure, including supply systems and wastewater treatment facilities, can be brought to a higher standard nationwide.”

Prior to this, the Committee will engage with Mr. Michael McCarthy, Chairperson Designate of the National Oversight & Audit Commission (NOAC). Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy, selected Mr McCarthy, Chief Executive Officer of the Irish Solar Energy Association and a former Labour TD for Cork South-West, as the most suitable candidate.

NOAC is required to oversee Local Authority activity and financial performance, and to encourage best practice throughout the sector.

The meeting is due to begin at 9.30am in Committee Room 1, Leinster House.
