Climate Action Committee to focus on energy generation as it continues hearings on Citizens’ Assembly Report

19 Sep 2018, 14:44

The Joint Committee on Climate Action will hear from Marie Donnelly, former Director Renewables, Research & Innovation and Energy Efficiency at DG Energy of the European Commission at its meeting on Wednesday, 20 September.

Chair of the Joint Committee Hildegarde Naughton TD said: “On Thursday, the Committee will resume its examination of the Citizens’s Assembly Report How the State can make Ireland a Leader in tackling Climate Change. The Committee will focus on the area of energy and will hear from Marie Donnelly, former Director - Renewables, Research & Innovation and Energy Efficiency at DG Energy of the European Commission. Marie will be able to advise the Committee on what other EU countries that are on a pathway to reducing Green House Gas emissions are doing and what we in Ireland need to do to lower emissions especially by improving the number of energy efficient households. We know that energy generation and access to reliable energy is essential to how we live our lives today – both economically and socially. However, energy generation in Ireland is still dominated by the use of fossil fuels which is having a detrimental impact on the environment. It is clear that we need to change the way we generate electricity, commute, heat our homes and power our industry. At our meeting we will examine how the transition can be made to secure, sustainable, reliable and affordable energy in all aspects of our lives – from heating to transport to electricity generation.”

This meeting will start at 2pm in Committee Room 4. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
