Climate Action Committee to hear from Secretary General of the Department of Business, Enterprise & Innovation

18 Oct 2018, 09:55

The Secretary General of the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Dr Orlaigh Quinn, will be before the Joint Committee on Climate Action later today, along with Officials from her department.

Committee Chair, Hildegarde Naughton, said today, “Climate action has the potential to provide job opportunities and the aim should be that Ireland becomes a leader in the development of energy efficient renewable technologies. These technologies could then be exported, thereby taking advantage of emerging opportunities to replace imports of fossil fuel with indigenous sources of energy. Our meeting will see the Committee address a wide range of issues relating to employment and climate action, such as, what can be done to attract the kind of FDI that has a low carbon footprint, and what the department is doing to foster employment growth in the green economy.

“The first recommendation of the Citizens Assembly was to create a new body with teeth that would ensure that public bodies delivered on their climate action requirements. The department played a key part in rolling out the Action Plan for Jobs and the Committee will want to know what governance arrangement could be suggested for now placing climate change at the heart of national and regional policy.”

The meeting will start at 1:45pm in Committee Room 4, Leinster House.
