Education Committee welcomes swift action to inspect, close potentially dangerous school buildings

The Joint Committee on Education and Skills has welcomed the Department of Education’s swift action to inspect and potentially close school buildings constructed by Western Building Systems.

Education Minister Joe McHugh briefed Committee members Wednesday, Oct. 24, as departmental officials published a list of schools built by the construction company.

“The Committee welcomes the fact that the Minister is placing the safety of students to the forefront in this situation,” said Committee Chair Fiona O’Loughlin TD. “Parents and pupils seeking to confirm the status of potentially affected schools should consult the Department of Education website, which the Minister has pledged will display the most up-to-date information.”

The meeting follows Tuesday’s decision to close two schools with 1,200 pupils in Tyrrelstown, northwest of Dublin, following structural inspections.

On Wednesday the Department published a list of 42 Western Building-constructed schools, including the two already closed in Tyrellstown and a third shut last weekend in Balbriggan, here.
