Education and Skills Committee to discuss school construction issues with Education Minister

5 Nov 2018, 16:01

Education Minister Joe McHugh TD will discuss his Department’s efforts to identify and resolve construction faults in school buildings on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Joint Committee on Education and Skills.

The meeting at 3:30 p.m. in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live here and on Android and Apple devices using the Houses of the Oireachtas app.

The meeting follows the Committee’s visit last week to Tullamore to receive a briefing from officials from the Planning and Building Unit of the Department of Education and Skills on the extent of design faults detected and the proposed steps and time scale of remedial action at affected sites.

“The recent discovery of potentially dangerous design faults in school buildings continues to disrupt the education of many children and the lives of their families,” said Committee Chair Fiona O’Loughlin TD.

“The Committee looks forward to discussing the Department’s recently completed assessment of risks at the identified 42 sites nationwide,” Deputy O’Loughlin said. “Affected families need reassurance that all reasonable measures are being taken to ensure their children’s safety in these relatively recently constructed school buildings.”

Separately, the Committee will meet with Fintan Moloney in advance of his proposed reappointment as chairman of the Governing Body of the Letterkenny Institute of Technology. This will provide the Committee with an opportunity to discuss with him his vision and priorities in the short to medium term and any challenges facing the institute.
