Public Accounts Committee to examine Hepatitis C treatment & related costs of €1.5b

21 Nov 2018, 13:56

The HSE and Department of Health will be before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) tomorrow to discuss chapter 15 of the 2017 C&AG report, which provides a detailed examination of Hepatitis C treatment in Ireland.

PAC Chairman, Seán Fleming TD, said, “Tomorrow's meeting is an examination of a chapter by the C&AG which reviewed the costs of compensation and treatment for individuals infected through the administration of contaminated blood and blood products between the 1960s and the 1990s. The examination found that, to date, expenditure of just over €1.5 billion has been incurred in support of the 1,700 people so infected.”

“The report also reviews progress in implementing the national Hepatitis C treatment programme established in 2015. A budget of €30 million has been allocated annually to provide such treatment.

“The Committee will want to know what lessons have been learnt from the Hepatitis C scandal and how the risk of serious incidents can be reduced by taking appropriate actions in the future.”

The meeting will start at 9am in Committee Room 3, Leinster House.
