Children and Youth Affairs Committee to discuss Oberstown operational review

14 Dec 2018, 17:39

The Joint Committee on Children and Youth Affairs will discuss the operational review of the Oberstown Children Detention Campus on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 5 p.m. with the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone TD.

The Department of Children and Youth Affairs published the interim and final reports of the Oberstown Review Implementation Group in June.

“The Oberstown review addressed suicide and self-harm reduction, use of handcuffs, behaviour management and perimeter security. The well-being of each young person in Oberstown is of paramount importance,” said Committee Chairman Alan Farrell TD.

“The Committee is eager to receive an update on progress on implementing required changes at Oberstown, and to hear detail on how the State is fulfilling its duty of care for the young people in custody,” Deputy Farrell said.

“Members also may seek information from the Minister regarding the non-publication of a separate report produced following 2016 occurrences on the Oberstown campus.”

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live here.
