Committee on Children and Youth Affairs to hear from Chairperson of the Board of Management of Oberstown Children Detention Campus

The Joint Committee on Children and Youth Affairs will meet tomorrow (Wednesday) at 9.30 in Committee Room 1, Leinster House to discuss the operational review report of Oberstown Children Detention Campus.

The Committee will hear from Professor Barry Goldson and Professor Nick Hardwick, the authors of the review report, in session 1 and from Professor Ursula Kilkelly, the Chairperson of the Board of Management of Oberstown in session 2.

In advance of the meeting, the Chairman of the Joint Committee, Deputy Alan Farrell, said: “The Committee is eager to receive an update on progress on implementing the required changes at Oberstown, given the responsibility the State has for each individual young person in custody there.

“It is of the utmost importance that the facilities and operations in Oberstown are of the highest possible standard and the Committee is keen to ascertain the level of progress made in this regard.

“Furthermore, members of the Committee will be seeking information and detail on how the State is fulfilling its duty of care for the young people who are in custody in Oberstown.”

Professor Barry Goldson, from the University of Liverpool, and Professor Nick Hardwick, former Chairperson of the UK’s parole board, were commissioned to undertake a review of the operations of Oberstown Children Detention Campus.

Professor Kilkelly will outline the composition of the board members and their experience and commitment to the interests and welfare of young people. Professor Kilkelly will also outline the process the board followed in commissioning the operational review.
