Committee on Business, Enterprise and Innovation to consider general scheme of bill to create Corporate Enforcement Authority

4 Feb 2019, 15:13

On Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 4 p.m., the Joint Committee on Business, Enterprise and Innovation will consider the general scheme of a bill that intends to establish a new Corporate Enforcement Authority with stronger powers to investigate increasingly complex breaches of company law.

The General Scheme of the Companies (Corporate Enforcement Authority) Bill 2018 proposes to transform the current Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement into a stand-alone agency with more investigative tools and autonomy to recruit specialist staff, including forensic accountants.

Officials from the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation will appear before the Committee on Tuesday.

“Ensuring the more effective enforcement of company law is a concern for all Members. We look forward to scrutinising the Bill and its aim of transforming the ODCE into a stronger, more nimble Corporate Enforcement Authority,” said Committee Chair Mary Butler TD.

The meeting in Committee Room 4 can be viewed live here.
