On Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m., the Joint Committee on Rural and Community Development will explore how the growth of remote working is creating opportunities and building Smart Communities.
Witnesses include representatives from Enterprise Ireland and Local Enterprise Offices, which are promoting awareness of the benefits of employing people to work from their homes and community co-working spaces.
Also scheduled to participate is Vanessa Tierney, co-founder of Abodoo. The remote-working company recently produced a “talent heat map” case study for Wexford County Council that the IDA utilised to attract foreign direct investment to the Hatch Lab, a new co-working facility in Gorey.
“The world of work is changing rapidly thanks to the emergence of new technologies and practices that allow many kinds of complex jobs to be performed from almost anywhere. This is good news for people living in small communities and in rural areas who previously have faced the prospect of long commutes if they wanted to avail of these opportunities,” said Committee Chairman Joe Carey TD.
“Enterprise Ireland and Local Enterprise Offices are emphasising how remote-working practices can save money for employers and employees alike and reduce traffic congestion and pollution,” Deputy Carey said. “The Committee is keen to identify policies and strategies that will promote these win-win propositions and create value-added work opportunities everywhere in Ireland.”
