Committee on Culture, Heritage & the Gaeltacht to discuss socio economic profile of Gaeltacht areas

2 Apr 2019, 17:06

The Joint Committee on Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will meet tomorrow to discuss the socio economic profile of the seven Gaeltacht areas.

The discussion will be based on a report published in 2018 by AIRO, Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute, along with Senator Pádraig Ó Céidigh.

The aim of the report is to provide a detailed reference profile on the demographic, social and economic characteristics of the seven Gaeltacht areas in Ireland and their related Limistéir Pleanála Teanga (LPT), or Language Planning Areas, based on the official results from Census 2016. It is intended that the report be used as a key evidence baseline to support future policy development for Gaeltacht areas.

Committee Chair, Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD, said, “The Committee is keen to discuss the significant issues facing Gaeltacht areas, as illustrated by this report. Members will wish to ascertain what supports can be put in place for Gaeltacht communities in order to mitigate some of the challenges these communities face, which include unemployment and an older age demographic.”

The Joint Committee meeting will start at 1.30pm in Committee Room 4, Leinster House.
