Committee on Budgetary Oversight to hear from Economists in the context of pre-budget consultation

The Committee on Budgetary Oversight will tomorrow, hear from two economists to get their views on the economy in the context of the committee’s pre-budget consultation.

Tomorrow, at 4pm, Economist Mr Colm McCarthy and Associate Professor of Economics, Dr Stephen Kinsella will come before the committee with a little over three months to go until Budget 2020 is revealed by the Minister.

“With Tuesday, October 8 likely to indicate the make up of Budget 2020, the Committee welcomes the chance to hold a discussion on the budget and macro-economic issues with Colm McCarthy and Stephen Kinsella” said Committee Chairman Colm Brophy TD, ahead of the meeting in Committee Room 3 which can be viewed live here

Dr Kinsella is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Limerick, and Senior Fellow at the Melbourne School of Government, University of Melbourne. His research interests includes the economics of small open economies like Ireland under austerity.

Colm McCarthy lectures in the School of Economics in University College Dublin, and produced a report the McCarthy Report to the Irish Government to deal with the Financial crisis in 2009.

“It is clear that we are faced with a number of important budget choices in specific areas of public expenditure, and with the potential fall-out from Brexit very much on the agenda, the insight of Tuesday’s witnesses is something we very much welcome”, added Mr. Brophy.
