Good Friday Committee to discuss the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement and the Environment

Consideration of Brexit and the environment on the island of Ireland will be on the agenda when the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement meets tomorrow, Thursday.

Representatives from the Environmental Pillarwill attendat 2.15pm in Committee Room 4, Leinster House for engagement on this matter.

The Environmental Pillaris comprised of 26 independent environmental non-governmental organisations (NGOs), working together to represent the views of the Irish environmental sector. The work of the pillar covers a broad range of areas including habitat conservation, wildlife protection, environmental education, sustainability, waste and energy issues, as well as environmental campaigning and lobbying.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Chair Seán Crowe said, “The Good Friday/Belfast Agreement had at its core the aim of peace, prosperity and the protection of human rights on the island of Ireland. Our landscape and its ecology are the heart of these objectives.”

Deputy Crowe added: “A no-deal Brexit poses huge challenges for the environment on the island of Ireland. We hope that our discussion with representatives of the Environmental Pillar will enhance our own understanding of the north-south environmental issues that are to be nurtured and enhanced.”
