The Joint Committee on Key Issues Affecting the Traveller Community will hold its first public meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, 24 September in Leinster House, Committee Room 2 at 11am.

Minnie Connors from the Wexford Traveller Development Group and representatives of the Traveller Mental Health Network, the Irish Traveller Movement, Kerry Travellers Group, and Pavee Point will appear before the Committee to discuss issues relating to Travellers' mental health.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee chairperson, Senator Colette Kelleher said: “We welcome all of our speakers to Leinster House. Our Committee will sit for six months following tomorrow’s meeting.

“Our first focus is on mental health because mental health issues have a huge significance in the Traveller community. We will be looking at the prevalence and the drivers of mental ill health but also what a good response would be, given the scale of the crisis among the Traveller community.

Over the coming months, the Committee intends to consider issues relating to mental health and health, education, employment, and accommodation as they impact on the Traveller community.

Proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
