Irish Language Committee to discuss Bilingual Services in the Department of Defence

The Department of Defence will appear before the Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands tomorrow, Tuesday, when it meets to discuss Irish language and bilingual services.

The Department of Defence is one of the Government Departments primarily concerned with ensuring the secure and stable environment necessary for economic growth and development.

The high hevel goal of the defence organisation is to provide for the military defence of the State, contribute to national and international peace and security and fulfil all other roles assigned by Government.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee Chair, Catherine Connolly TD, said, “The Committee welcomes the opportunity to hear from the Department of Defence regarding its bilingual services and its commitment to the Irish language.

“On Tuesday the Committee will explore what the Department is doing to promote and foster the provision of a bilingual service. The need for definite steps to be taken regarding the services being provided and also the numbers of bilingual staff.”

The meeting will start at 4pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.
