Health service preparations for Brexit will be discussed at the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 25 September in Leinster House, Committee Room 3 at 11am.

Officials from the Department of Health, HSE and Health Products Regulatory Authority will appear before the TDs and Senators to discuss the issue.

Speaking before the meeting, chairman of the Committee, Dr Michael Harty TD said: “ A no-deal Brexit has the potential to be very disruptive to the supply of medicines and medical devices especially as many of these either originate or come through the UK to Ireland”.

“While the Committee is reassured by the commitment and intensive efforts made by the Department and its associated bodies to date, this is a unique situation and we want to get an update on work in this area.

“ We will also looking at the implications  of Brexit  in terms of the recognition of qualifications and accreditation of staff and how this will impact on the health services both for recruitment of staff from the UK and also in respect of our own professions who go to work and gain further qualifications in the UK.”
