Justice Committee to hear from Ombudsman on Direct Provision

24 Sep 2019, 12:46

The Joint Committee on Justice and Equality will discuss Direct Provision tomorrow (Wednesday) at 9am in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

The Committee will hear from Ombudsman Peter Tyndall on his commentary on the Direct Provision system based on his two reports from earlier this year, The Ombudsman & Direct Provision: The Story So Far and The Ombudsman & Direct Provision: An Update for 2018.

Ahead of the meeting Committee Chairman Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said: “We look forward to hearing from the Ombudsman regarding his commentary on the Direct Provision sector and his interactions with asylum seekers.

“The Ombudsman has examined how Ireland deals with people who present themselves here seeking refuge, how asylum seekers are accommodated and how they are responded to when they raise issues around that accommodation.

“This is the latest engagement in our examination of Direct Provision and we will be publishing our findings on this important matter later in this Oireachtas term.”

The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
