Youth mental health focus of Committee on Children and Youth Affairs meeting

24 Sep 2019, 15:47

The HSE and Jigsaw will discuss youth mental health at a meeting of the Joint Committee on Children and Youth Affairs, tomorrow Wednesday, 25 September in Leinster House, Committee Room 1 at 10am.

The HSE’s Community, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and inpatient facilities for young people are some of the issues that will be addressed.

Jigsaw, which was set up in 2006 to provide services for young people struggling with mental health, will outline its experience on the ground, the services it provides and the demands on those services.

Speaking before the meeting, the Chairman of the Joint Committee, Deputy Alan Farrell, said: “We have previously heard there has been a surge in rates of anxiety and depression in young people over the past 25 years. Previous research by Jigsaw has shown that a third of Ireland’s young people have experienced mental health difficulties.

“We look forward to this opportunity to hear about the existing mental health services for young people under the age of 18, plus the needs of this sector to meet that demand.”
