Joint Committee on Justice and Equality to hear from social media companies on online harassment and harmful communications

8 Oct 2019, 10:12

The Joint Committee on Justice and Equality will tomorrow (Wednesday) hear from social media companies on their plans to tackle online harassment and harmful communications at 9am in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

In its second meeting on the matter, Members will hear submissions from representatives of Facebook Ireland, Twitter Ireland and Google Ireland, as well as the Internet Service Providers Association of Ireland.

Ahead of the meeting Committee Chairman Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said: “We welcome this opportunity to engage with the social media companies and the internet industry on this important matter. Members will particularly wish to focus on whether the social media companies can self-regulate or if legislative action is required to deal with online harassment and harmful communications."

The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
