Proposed Organ Donation legislation to be discussed at Joint Committee on Health meeting

15 Oct 2019, 14:53

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health will consider proposed new organ donation legislation at a meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 16 October in Leinster House, Committee Room 3 at 9am.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee chairman, Dr Michael Harty TD said: “The Human Tissue (Transplantation, Post-mortem, Anatomical Examination and Public Display) Bill 2018 is an important piece of legislation which should increase donations and ultimately change more lives of more people who are recipients of transplanted organs.

“The Committee will want to ensure that the draft legislation achieves that purpose whilst also ensuring that the general public are fully aware of the changes to donation regulations which will see the introduction of an opt-out system of consent for deceased organ donation and an associated register.”

Representatives of the Irish Medical Organisation will attend for the second session of tomorrow’s meeting at 11.30 am as the Committee resumes its discussion on workforce planning in the Irish health sector.

Dr Harty said: “In order to hold the Minister and the HSE accountable, the Committee wants to establish how the public health sector is managing its most important resource, namely the people who deliver services. The review by the Committee is driven by the numbers of people who whose health needs are not being met. The Committee wants to meet all stakeholders to establish how we can do things better and this week we will meet the IMO who represent those who are charging with leading service delivery in both our acute hospitals and in the community.”
