Apprenticeships as a career option on agenda of Oireachtas Education Committee

21 Oct 2019, 15:59

Increasing the uptake of apprenticeships will be discussed at a meeting of the Joint Committee on Education and Skills, tomorrow, Tuesday, 22 October in Leinster House, Committee Room 2 at 3.30pm.

Representatives of Solas and the Institute of Guidance Counsellors are attending the meeting of TDs and Senators.

Chair of the Oireachtas Committee, Deputy Fiona O’Loughlin said: “We recently welcomed the winning Irish WorldSkills team of apprentices, trainees and students who achieved 10th place in the world overall, at the 45th WorldSkills Competition in Kazan, Russia.

“One common message from the team members we heard from, is apprenticeships as an option is not promoted in secondary schools with heavy emphasis placed on third level. Our Committee is  shining a light on recent development in apprenticeships and exploring efforts to increase their uptake and the role guidance counsellors can play in promoting apprenticeships in secondary schools as a viable and positive pathway for students to explore.”
