4 Nov 2019, 17:54

Representatives of the HSE, the Irish College of General Practitioners and the Traveller Visibility Group will appear before the Joint Committee on Key Issues Affecting the Traveller Community, tomorrow, Tuesday, 5 November.

The meeting, which is one of a series focusing on Traveller health, takes place in Leinster House, Committee room 1 at 11am.

The Traveller Visibility Group (TVG) is a Cork based Traveller led organisation. It has a health project which works with members of the Traveller community to support better health outcomes for Travellers.

Speaking before the meeting, the Chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community, Senator Colette Kelleher, said: “We have heard of gross and stark health inequalities that affect the Traveller community with mortality rates far higher than the general population.

“Tomorrow, we will hear from the ICGP and TVG on models of care and projects currently in place to improve Traveller health. We welcome the opportunity to question the HSE on existing projects and funding dedicated to Traveller health and get an update on the promised action plan to address the very serious health inequalities and specific health needs of Travellers.”
