Joint Committee on Business, Enterprise and Innovation to begin pre-legislative scrutiny of General Scheme of Employment Permits (Consolidation and Amendment) Bill

12 Nov 2019, 17:38

The Joint Committee on Business, Enterprise and Innovation will meet tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House for pre-legislative scrutiny of the General Scheme of an Employment Permits (Consolidation and Amendment) Bill.

Officials from the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation will be in attendance to brief Deputies and Senators on the proposed legislation, which if enacted will repeal and replace a number of current Acts on the Statute Books which deal with Employment Permits.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Chair Mary Butler TD said: “The Review of Economic Migration Policy conducted last year indicated that the employment permits system, while robust, lacked flexibility, and is in need of some updating. The General Scheme before the Committee seeks to address the issues identified in the Review – it proposes a revision of the labour market needs test, and interesting initiatives such as seasonal and special circumstances employment permits. Members look forward to engaging with Department officials on this proposed legislation.”

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
