Education Minister before Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community

2 Dec 2019, 13:14

Education Minister Joe McHugh will appear before the Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community, tomorrow, Tuesday, in Leinster House, Committee Room 1 at 11 am.

Representatives from the Department of Education and Skills, Higher Education Authority, National Adult Literacy Agency, Education and Training Boards Ireland and Aontas will also appear, as the Committee continues its focus on equity of access and outcomes to education for members of the Traveller community.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Chair Senator Colette Kelleher said: “More than one in four Travellers leave school before the age of 13 compared to 1 per cent of the general population. Without appropriate, targeted supports, Travellers are effectively pushed out of education.

“We welcome the Minister, officials and education organisations before the Committee to hear what is needed, what can be done and what is being planned to improve educational outcomes for Travellers at all levels.”
