Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht to discuss impact of Covid-19 on tourism and Tourism Recovery Plan

20 Oct 2020, 16:24

The Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht will discuss the impact of Covid-19 across the Tourism Sector and the Tourism Recovery Plan 2020-2023 when it meets tomorrow, Wednesday, 21 October.

Chaired by Deputy Niamh Smyth, the meeting at 2.00pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will hear from Ruth Andrews, Chair of the Tourism Recovery Task Force, and two representatives of the tourism sector: Sean Connick, MD of the Dunbrody Famine Ship and Kennedy Homestead in New Ross, Co Wexford; and Paul Gallagher, General Manager of Buswells Hotel in Dublin.

Deputy Smyth said: “The Committee has already looked at the impact Covid-19 has had on sports and the arts, and Members now wish to examine how the pandemic has devastated tourism across Ireland this year. All parts of the sector have been badly impacted by Covid, from the accommodation and hospitality sectors, to coach and tour operators, tourist attractions and activity providers.

“Tourism is a major part of our economy, with more than a quarter of a million people employed in tourism enterprises across the country. These are the jobs at greatest risk due to the pandemic, as revenue losses to the industry this year are expected to be around €5billion. Members look forward to meeting with Ruth Andrews, Sean Connick and Paul Gallagher to discuss the impact of the pandemic on the sector and the Task Force’s plan to help the industry recover in the years ahead.”

The Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
