Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage to discuss Strategic Housing Developments tomorrow in the first of two public meetings this week

9 Nov 2020, 17:09

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage will meet twice this week, commencing tomorrow, Tuesday.

The 11am meeting will see representatives from An Bord Pleanála and officials from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage appear in Committee Room 2 from 11am (watch live) to discuss Strategic Housing Developments (SHDs).

SHD's are housing applications which can be made direct to An Bord Pleanála and are defined as the development of 100 or more houses on land zoned for residential use or for a mixture of residential and other uses, the development of student accommodation units which, when combined, contain 200 or more bed spaces.

In advance of the meeting, Committee Chair, Steven Matthews, TD, said: “The committee very much welcomes the input of An Bord Pleanála and officials from the Department for this week’s meetings.

“There is a strong legislative basis for SHD’s, in that applications for permission to build can go directly to An Bord Pleanála and not to a Planning Authority. As a committee we are eager to discuss the challenges and opportunities which exist.”

On Thursday, officials from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage will appear at 9am for a discussion which will focus on the Department's Statement of Strategy, watch live.
