Joint Committee on Disability Matters to continue discussions on National Disability Inclusion Strategy and United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

10 Nov 2020, 13:43

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters will continue discussions on the National Disability Inclusion Strategy (NDIS) and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) when it meets tomorrow, Wednesday, 11 November.

The meeting at 4.30pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House will hear from:

  • Representatives from Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, Sinéad Gibney, Chief Commissioner and Dr Rosaleen McDonagh, Commission Member and Chair of the Commission’s Disability Advisory Committee; and
  • Representatives from National Disability Authority, Dr Aideen Hartney, Director and Dr Rosalyn Tamming, Interim Head of Policy, Public Affairs & Research

Committee Chair Deputy Michael Moynihan said: “Following our engagement last week with Ministers Roderic O’Gorman and Anne Rabbitte on the progress made in both areas, the Committee looks forward to hearing the views of these key stakeholders. Members are particularly interested in discussing an assessment of progress under the NDIS and gaps in legislation, policy or programmes to address the intention of the UNCRPD. It is important that we listen to a wide range of views and experiences as we develop our work programme and monitor Ireland’s progress in implementing the UNCRPD.”

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 4 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
