Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development and the Islands to discuss Mobile and Broadband Coverage in rural Ireland

15 Dec 2020, 15:43

The Joint Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development and the Islands will meet tomorrow to discuss Mobile and Broadband Coverage in rural Ireland.

On Wednesday, at 9am, live on Oireachtas TV, officials from the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications will appear in  Committee Room 4 of Leinster House for the second discussion surrounding this topic, this month, following on from the appearance of the Department of Community and Rural Development on December 2.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee Chairperson, Denis Naughten TD, said: “The reality is Covid-19 has increased the pressure on our mobile and fixed telecommunications networks. Now more than ever before we need to ensure that our citizens have access to a reliable mobile phone network as well as a fixed broadband network.

“The Committee notes that during the recent lockdown, one of our fixed broadband or mobile networks went down every second day, yet the taskforce established by Government to liaise with the telecoms sector never held a meeting to discuss the Covid impact.

“The deterioration in these networks must be rectified irrespective of how the Public Health emergency pans out in 2021, remote working and enterprise hubs are essential to employees, employers, families and whole communities.”
