1 Feb 2021, 17:23

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage will meet tomorrow from 10am to discuss electoral reform when representatives from academia appear.

The purpose of the meeting, scheduled for 10am in Committee Room 4 (watch live), is a resumption of Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the Electoral Reform Bill, with Dr Theresa Reidy, Head of Department of Government and Politics, UCC and Dr Jane Suiter, Associate Professor, School of Communications at DCU.

In advance of the meeting, Committee Chair, Steven Matthews, TD, said: “The Committee looks forward to Tuesday’s resumption of this very important topic, which follows on from our meeting last month with the Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

“Electoral reform was a significant commitment in the Programme for Government, and Tuesday’s witnesses will bring their expertise to a variety of topics, from  online political advertising to the maintenance of the Register of Electors. The General Scheme also includes provisions to facilitate the holding of electoral events where Covid-19 restrictions are in place.”
