8 Feb 2021, 15:07

The Joint Committee on Budgetary Oversight will discuss parliamentary engagement in the budgetary cycle, with Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe and Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Michael McGrath at a meeting in Leinster House tomorrow, Tuesday 9 February at 4pm. The meeting will take place in Committee Room 2.

The Committee wants to discuss its recent Interim Report on the framework for parliamentary engagement throughout the course of the budgetary cycle.

The Interim Report of the Committee highlighted a number of areas that the Committee sees as having scope for potential improvement, including a more collaborative pre-budget scrutiny process across Oireachtas committees, a more holistic consideration of financial performance by committees, and the work of the Committee on Budgetary Oversight.

The Committee is currently consulting widely on the interim report and must have its final report laid before the Dáil before 25th February.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Chairman, Neasa Hourigan said:“I look forward to engaging with the Ministers on the Committee’s interim report, and look forward to working collaboratively with the Ministers and their officials towards enhancing the effectiveness of the interaction between the Oireachtas and the budgetary process. A more effective budgetary framework can lead to improved outcomes through better informed policy-making, and both Ministers are important stakeholders in progressing this work.”
