The Joint Committee on Education, Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science will meet tomorrow when the Future Expansion of the Technological Universities will be discussed.

Tomorrow’s meeting will be streamed live on Oireachtas TV and begins at 4pm in Committee Room 4. Following on from last week’s appearance by the Technological Higher Education Authority (THEA), the following witnesses appear before the committee regarding the same topic.

  • Mr. Simon Harris TD. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science
  • Mr. Niall Collins TD, Minister of State for Skills and Further Education

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee Chairperson, Paul Kehoe TD, said: “Last Tuesday we began our discussion regarding the expansion of the Technological Universities with the CEO, President and Vice President of THEA, along with the President of Munster Technological University and other Institutes of Technology Presidents.

“The pathway to Technological Universities is set out in the National Strategy for Higher Education to 2030 outlining how the network of Technological Universities (TUs) should be established within the higher education landscape.

Chair Kehoe added: “Last week key issues such as Sustainable Funding;  the need for urgent legislative enactment to allow for Borrowing Capability; Regional connectedness; the importance of Human Capital for Research Capability and the related issue of academic staff contracts; encouraging STEM talent and STEM gender equality; apprenticeship reform and the TU’s role in educational disadvantage and encouraging marginalised cohorts of students were raised by the witnesses. The Committee looks forward to developing these themes further with the Minister and Minister of State."
