POSTPONED:Oireachtas Committee to hear from European Commission’s Deputy Head of UK Relations Task Force

22 Feb 2021, 11:46

Note: The below meeting has been postponed. It will be rescheduled for a later date.

The EU Affairs Committee will resume its discussion on the Northern Ireland Protocol when it meets with the Commission’s Deputy Head of the Task Force for Relations with the United Kingdom, Clara Martinez Alberola, tomorrow Tuesday, 23 February at 10am.

The meeting is part of the Committee’s examination of the Commission’s decision to trigger Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol before making a u-turn on the move.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Vice-chair Deputy Brendan Howlin said:  “The Committee has engaged with Minister Thomas Byrne and Commission Vice President Maroš Šefčovič on this issue and welcomes this opportunity to continue the discussion with Ms Clara Martines Alberola.

“Among the matters we want to explore is whether the process followed in relation to Article 16 recently was the process envisaged by the Taskforce during negotiations.

“As the Taskforce is being wound down at the end of this month, will the new service for the EU-UK Agreement retain the expertise, focus and commitment to the Irish border that the Task Force has demonstrated throughout the process and will that commitment be guaranteed with Irish representation in the new service.’’
