15 Mar 2021, 15:07

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications Networks will meet on two occasions this week to discuss three separate topics, commencing Tuesday at 11:30am when the viability of the post office system is discussed.

Ned O'Hara, General Secretary of the Irish Postmasters Union and representatives from the Independent Postmasters Group will appear for tomorrow’s session before two further sessions occur on Thursday, with all Joint Committee on Transport and Communications Networks meetings this week taking place in the Dáil Chamber, watch all sessions live.

On Thursday from 11.30am two sessions will take place, with the Impact of Covid-19 on driving instructors, and the Procedure and Appointment process for the Chair of the Irish Aviation Authority to be discussed.  Representatives from the Unite Trade Union, Driving Instructors Branch, and Officials from the Department of Transport will appear.

Speaking in advance of the meetings, Committee Chair, Kieran O’Donnell TD said: “The committee looks forward to engaging General Secretary of the Irish Postmasters’ Union, regarding the challenges which his members face nationally, but also in light of the recent developments in the Banking sector with branch closures nationwide, there are substantial opportunities which exist for the An Post network nationally in terms of services and employment, to add to its existing economic and social value in both rural and urban communities.

“On Thursday we will learn about the Impact of Covid-19 on driving instructors, and this session follows on from the appearance of the RSA two weeks when the ongoing backlog in driving tests, affecting up to 100,000 people, were discussed. In a second session we will examine the process of the appointment of the Chair of the Irish Aviation Authority. As is well documented it is a challenging time for the aviation industry, and this topic couldn’t be more timely.”
