Seanad Committee to discuss the impact of Brexit on trade and business sector

22 Mar 2021, 07:00

The Seanad Special Select Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union will meet this afternoon to discuss the impact of Brexit on the business sector, and on trade across the island and between Ireland and Britain.

The meeting of Senators at 3pm in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House will hear from representatives of:

  • Irish Small and Medium Enterprises (ISME);
  • Northern Ireland Retail Consortium;
  • InterTradeIreland; and
  • Confederation of British Industry (CBI);

Speaking ahead of Monday’s meeting, Committee Chair Senator Lisa Chambers said: “We have seen in recent days figures from the Central Statistics Office for January which have shown large drops in trade between the UK and Ireland. Imports from Great Britain fell by 65 per cent in January 2021 compared to the previous January.

 “Imports of goods from Great Britain in January 2021 were €497 million, a fall of €906 million compared with January 2020.  Exports to Great Britain decreased by 14 per cent to €946 million in January 2021 when compared with January 2020, according to the CSO.

“We have seen a considerable fall-off in lorry traffic between Dublin Port and Holyhead in Wales, the main gateway between Ireland and Britain.

“The Committee welcomes this opportunity to discuss the impact on businesses across the island and on trade with Britain with the representatives of the sector.”

The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
