Health Committee to discuss medical card scheme

29 Mar 2021, 11:34

The Joint Committee on Health will discuss the operation of the medical card scheme with officials from the HSE in Leinster House, tomorrow, Tuesday, 30 March at 9.30am.

Witnesses will appear virtually for the meeting in Committee Room 2.

Committee Chairman Seán Crowe TD said the Committee welcomed this opportunity to examine the HSE’s current operation of the medical card system.

Speaking before the meeting, Deputy Crowe said: “Medical cards for the terminally ill is one of the key areas the Committee will examine.  A plan to extend medical card eligibility to terminally ill patients, with a prognosis of up to 24 months, was announced last month. The Committee would like details of the arrangements the HSE has put in place to make this happen and the criteria and process in place for patients coping with a terminal illness diagnosis to get a medical card.

“The dental scheme for medical card holders and the impact of Covid-19, in terms of remote working and the PUP payment, on the eligibility of students to medical cards are other areas the Committee plans to explore.”
