Oireachtas Committee to discuss CETA with former EU Trade Director General

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will discuss The Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) with former EU Trade Director General David O’Sullivan, tomorrow, Tuesday, 30 March at 6.30pm.

Mr O’Sullivan, who is giving evidence in a personal capacity, has held a number of senior EU positions. He was Director General for Trade between 2005 and 2010.

The meeting, which is being held virtually from the Dáil Chamber, is the first in a series of engagements the Committee has planned on CETA.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Chairman Joe McHugh TD said: “The deal has already been ratified by Canada and must be ratified by each member state in line with national requirements The Committee welcomes this opportunity to discuss with Mr O’Sullivan the proposed CETA trade deal between the EU and Canada and explore its origins, negotiations to date and current status.

“Another area the Committee will be examining is the Investor Court System proposed under CETA which has attracted considerable debate to date.”
