Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment to resume Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the Employment Permits (Consolidation and Amendment) Bill 2019

12 Apr 2021, 14:00

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment will resume Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Employment Permits (Consolidation and Amendment) Bill 2019 when it meets tomorrow, Tuesday, 13 April.

The meeting at 9.30am in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will discuss the Heads of the Bill with:

  • Representatives from Meat Industry Ireland (MII); and
  • Representatives from The Migrant Rights Centre Ireland.

Committee Chairman Deputy Maurice Quinlivan said: “This Bill proposes to update the employment permits system to increase its flexibility and effectiveness to respond to changes in labour supply and demand, or employment practices. The Committee has previously heard from the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment, and representatives of employers and unions. Since many workers who come to Ireland and avail of work permits are employed in the meat processing industry, we now look forward to hearing the views of MII and the Migrant Rights Centre on the proposed legislation.”

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
