Oireachtas Committee to explore strategies to increase Traveller employment levels

19 Apr 2021, 12:16

The Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community will discuss potential policy responses to boost employment levels among Travellers at a meeting in Leinster House, Committee Room 4 tomorrow, Tuesday, 20 April at 12.30pm.

The meeting is being held in response to research revealing an unemployment rate of 80 per cent among Travellers.

Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) Professor Frances McGinnity and Professor Dorothy Watson; Public Appointments Service CEO, Shirley Comerford and Open Doors Initiative CEO, Jeanne McDonagh will appear before the Committee for the discussion.

Committee Cathaoirleach Senator Eileen Flynn TD said: “Real action is needed to reverse the reality for the eight out of ten Travellers that are currently unemployed. Despite the myths and stereotypes, Travellers want to work but instead are massively underemployed. The Committee welcomes this opportunity to explore the reality behind the statistics with representatives from the ESRI, the Public Appointments Service and the Open Doors Initiative.”

“Exploring the policy directions needed to increase opportunities and practical pathways for Travellers to participate in the workforce in both the public and private sectors, the current barriers for Travellers in accessing jobs, and turning work experience programmes and internships into sustainable full time work are among the issues that will be discussed.”
