Foreign Affairs Committee to discuss current situation in Myanmar

26 Apr 2021, 12:20

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence will discuss the current situation in Myanmar at a meeting in Leinster House, tomorrow, Tuesday, 27 April at 12.30pm.

Dr Mary C Murphy, senior lecturer at the Department of Government and Politics at University College Cork will brief Committee members on the developing crisis. Dr Murphy hascontributed to the work of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Myanmar. She was the lead author on two research reports examining the roles, functions and practices of Myanmar MPs between 2015 and 2020.

Cathaoirleach of the Committee Charlie Flanagan TD said: “Dr Murphy’s work has given her an expert insight into the distressing reality of the recent military coup in Myanmar. Reports of the coup, the arrest of leading political figures and internet blackouts are causing deep dismay.  Her research work revealed overwhelming support among the majority of MPs for the consolidation of Myanmar’s fledgling democratic system.

“The Committee welcomes this engagement with Dr Murphy to discuss the coup and get her views on the response needed to the developing crisis in Myanmar, both at an international level and in the context of Ireland’s seat on the UN Security Council Ireland.”

The meeting will take place in the Dáil Chamber. Watch the meeting  live.
