10 May 2021, 07:00

The Seanad Special Select Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union will meet this afternoon with representatives of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the Health Service Executive and the Revenue Commissioners to discuss customs checks and trade flows in and out of the Irish ports following the UK’s exit from the EU.

The Committee of Senators will meet at 3pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House with:

  • Hazel Sheridan, Head of Import Controls (Operations) Division, and Louise Byrne, Head of Brexit and International Trade Division, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine;
  • Joe Ryan, National Director National Services, and Ann Marie Part, Assistant National Director for Environmental Health, Health Service Executive; and
  • Gerry Harrahill, Commissioner, Director General of Customs, and Celine O’Neill, Principal Officer, Brexit Policy Branch, Revenue Commissioners.

Speaking ahead of Monday’s meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Senator Lisa Chambers said: “Since the end of the Brexit transition period and the coming into effect of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement on January 1, we have seen increased customs and regulatory checks at Irish ports. We have also seen significant falls in trade flows through these ports, particularly for food and agricultural produce. The Committee looks forward to discussing these and related matters with the Department, HSE and Revenue officials.”

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
