Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach to meet the Central Bank to discuss the Consumer Credit Amendment Bill 2018

11 May 2021, 10:48

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach will meet tomorrow to engage with the Central Bank to continue detailed scrutiny of the Consumer Credit (Amendment) Bill 2018.

Ms Gráinne McEvoy, Director of Consumer Protection, Central Bank, will appear for Wednesday’s meeting at 12.30pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House, live on Oireachtas TV.

In advance of the meeting, Chairperson of the Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach, John McGuinness, TD, said: “Wednesday’s meeting with the Central Bank follows on from the appearance of Minister Donohoe a week ago. On that occasion an interest rate cap on moneylenders, by amending the Consumer Credit Act of 1995, was among the topics raised.

“The speed of these reforms, and wider issues from the viability of the moneylender sector, to average interest rates and all the various impacts on the industry and most importantly, the consumer, is something committee members want to discuss with the agency with responsibility for ensuring our financial system ultimately operates in the best interests of the consumer. I look forward to this engagement.”
