Oireachtas Committee to receive update from the Shared Island Unit

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will hear from representatives of the Shared Island Unit at a meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, 18 May in Leinster House, Committee Room 3 at 9:30 am.

Officials from the Department of An Taoiseach; Aingeal O’Donoghue, Assistant Secretary and Eoghan Duffy, Principal Officer will give TDs and Senators an update on the work of the unit.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Fergus O’Dowd TD said: “The Committee looks forward to hearing from the Shared Island Unit, and the progress made in achieving the Unit’s objectives and priorities set out in 2020.

The Unit’s focus is on three key areas, building a Shared Island; fostering constructive and inclusive dialogue, including the Shared Island Dialogue series; and commissioning research and that the work of the Unit is guided by the principles of the Good Friday Agreement.

The Committee Members will welcome discussions around the Unit’s objectives including the delivery of the commitments on Shared Island in the Programme for Government; strengthening social, economic and political links on the island; and the promotion of all-island approaches to the strategic challenges facing Ireland, North and South and its plans on achieving them in the months and years ahead.”
