24 May 2021, 16:00

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 25 May, with experts to discuss Ireland’s national cybersecurity in the context of the cyber attacks on the HSE and Department of Health.

The meeting at 9.30am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House will hear from:

·         Pat Larkin, CEO, Ward Solutions;

·         Padraic O’Reilly, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer, Cybersaint;

·         Matt Makowski, cybersecurity expert; and

·         Blathnaid Carolan, cybersecurity recruitment specialist.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Kieran O’Donnell said: “The recent cyber attacks on the HSE and the Department of Health were an unprecedented assault on our public services and a threat to Ireland’s national security. It is critical that we understand how these attackers gained access to the HSE systems so that our national cyber security experts can develop the skills and tools needed to ensure such breaches cannot occur again. The Committee looks forward to hearing the views of these experts in the field about the nature of the threats we face and what can be done to secure other government departments and state agencies from similar cyber attacks in the future.”

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
