Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach to resume examination of processes and procedures regarding determination of remuneration of senior public servants

1 Jun 2021, 16:05

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 2 June, to resume examination of the processes and procedures regarding the determination of remuneration of senior public servants, in the context of the recent salary increase approved for the new Secretary General of the Department of Health.

The meeting at 12.30pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House will hear from Martin Fraser, Secretary General of the Department of the Taoiseach.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy John McGuinness said: “This matter arose with the recent approval by the Government for a significant increase in the salary offered to the new Secretary General of the Department of Health. The Committee and our colleagues in the Public Accounts Committee chaired by Deputy Brian Stanley have agreed to a joint examination of this issue.

“We would like to understand how this decision was arrived at and the thinking behind approving a rise well above the previous €211,000 salary for the role. We look forward to hearing from Mr Fraser and hope he can give us an insight into the processes and procedures involved in this decision by the Government.”

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach has 13 Members, nine from the Dáil and four from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 4 can be viewed live on Oireachtas.ie.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
