Joint Committee on Transport and Communications to discuss challenges facing aviation industry and announcements about Shannon and Cork with CEO of Aer Lingus

21 Jun 2021, 15:20

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will meet with the Chief Executive of Aer Lingus tomorrow, Tuesday, 22 June, to discuss the challenges facing the aviation industry and the recent announcements relating to Shannon and Cork airports.

The meeting at 9.30am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House will hear from Lynn Embleton, CEO of Aer Lingus, and Donal Moriarty, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Kieran O’Donnell said: “The Committee welcomes this opportunity to engage with the CEO of Aer Lingus on the many challenges facing the aviation industry in Ireland and internationally due to public health and travel restrictions put in place to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Recent announcements by Aer Lingus that it plans to close its Shannon cabin crew base permanently and close its Cork base for three months from September are very concerning, especially for those cabin crew and other workers. These proposed base closures also have major implications for connectivity, business and tourism across the south, mid-west and west of Ireland.

“Members look forward to discussing with Ms Embleton and Mr Moriarty these and related matters, including how Aer Lingus is addressing the challenge posed by the closure of Stobart Air and its implications for regional connectivity to Britain, the introduction in Ireland from July 19 of the EU Digital Covid Certificate for travel, and the role rapid antigen testing has to play in facilitating the reopening of aviation travel.”

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
