Oireachtas Committee to discuss First Annual Report of Oversight Group on Women, Peace and Security

Independent chair of the Oversight Group Nora Owen will join the Committee virtually for the meeting.

The report examines Ireland’s delivery of the third National Action Plan (NAP)on the implementation of the landmark UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR1325) and related resolutions on women, peace and security (WPS).

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Charlie Flanagan TD said: “The disproportionate impact of conflict on women and girls and the importance and essential role women play in conflict resolution and peace-keeping was acknowledged in the UNSCR1325 which was adopted more than 20 years ago.

“Ireland’s third National Action Plan (NAP) on Women, Peace and Security is structured around the four pillars of Prevention, Participation, Protection and Promotion. The Committee welcomes tomorrow’s engagement with the NAP implementation Oversight Group to hear about Ireland’s achievements and work under these pillars to achieve gender equality and empower women from conflict affected areas internationally.”

Other members of the Oversight Group scheduled to attend the meeting include: Áine Hearns, Director, Conflict Resolution Unit, Department of Foreign Affairs;  Dr Walt Kilroy, Associate Director, Institute for International Conflict Resolution and Reconstruction and Assistant Professor, School of Law and Government Dublin City University; Egide Dhala, Outreach Coordinator, International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Ireland; Shane O’Connor, Principal Officer, International Protection, Accommodation Services, Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth; Deirdre Ní Néill, Assistant Principal, Equality and Gender Equality Unit, Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth; and  Chief Superintendent, Louise Synnott, An Garda Síochána.
