Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media to meet Executive Vice President of the European Commission Margrethe Vestager

The Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 23 June, with Executive Vice President of the European Commission Margrethe Vestager to discuss ‘Making Europe Fit for the Digital Age’.

The meeting at 3.30pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will be split into two sessions:

·         3.30-5pm – Executive Vice President of the European Commission for A Europe fit for the Digital Age and European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager; and

·         5.05-5.30pm – Representatives from the Music and Entertainment Association of Ireland (MEAI) to discuss Impact of Covid-19 on the Entertainment Sector.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Niamh Smyth said: “The Committee welcomes this opportunity to discuss Europe’s digital future with Executive Vice-President Vestager. The last year and a half through the pandemic has shown us all how critical the digital world has become in our lives in terms of communications, business and entertainment. We look forward to discussing the EU’s strategy for the digital transformation of Europe in the decade ahead, including in the areas of broadcast, media and online safety, and also in addressing issues regarding media literacy and disinformation.

“In our second session, we are interested in hearing the views of the Music and Entertainment Association of Ireland on the impact of Covid-19 on the music and entertainment sector and the supports needed to restart and sustain live entertainment as hospitality reopens over the months ahead.”

The Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
