6 Jul 2021, 16:38

The Joint Committee on Health will get an update on progress on the National Children’s Hospital at a meeting in Leinster House, Committee Room 2, tomorrow, Wednesday, 7 July at 9.30am.

Officials from the Department of Health and representatives from the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board and Children’s Health Ireland are due to attend the meeting.

The National Paediatric Hospital Development Board’s Chief Officer David Gunning, Project Director Phelim Devine and Medical Director Dr. Emma Curtis;  Children’s Health Ireland’s Chief Executive Officer Eilish Hardiman;  Department of Health’s Acting Director of Health Infrastructure Fiona Prendergast and Acting Director of Health Infrastructure Principal Officer Eamonn Quinn will appear before the meeting by video link.

Committee Cathaoirleach Seán Crowe TD said: “This project is about providing a national hospital for sick children yet there is still uncertainty over its completion date. The project has been dogged by delays, controversy and spiralling costs.

“Speculation is growing that the cost of the final project could exceed the €1.7 billion estimate. Members look forward to this engagement to get crucial answers on the project; to find out when building work will be completed, how much it will cost and when sick children in need of care will be able to access that care at the long-awaited hospital.”
