Agriculture Committee commences Pre-legislative scrutiny of the Animal Health and Welfare (Amendment) Bill 2021

14 Jul 2021, 18:36

The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food, and the Marine will commence Pre-legislative scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Animal Health and Welfare (Amendment) Bill 2021 at tomorrow’s meeting, 9:30 am, Thursday, 15 July, and will include engagement with Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

The meeting will be split into two sessions:

  • Session 1: (09:30 - 10:30) Representatives from Tazetta Teo, representatives from Vasa Ltd. and representatives from Willow Herb Ltd
  • Session 2: (10:30 - 11:30) Charlie McConalogue, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine

The meeting at 9:30 am will be broadcast from Committee Room 3 of Leinster House.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Cathaoirleach, Jackie Cahill TD, said: “The Committee will take the opportunity to listen to two of only three companies in Ireland affected by this new legislation. The Bill’s primary objective is the prohibition of fur farming. Farming of animals for their fur is currently a legitimate legal activity in Ireland, but the Government is now following through on its commitment to bring forward legislation that prohibits fur farming in the State.

The Cathaoirleach added: “The Committee and I look forward to hearing from Vasa Ltd and Willow Herb Ltd about their concerns about the legislation and compensation scheme. But we also welcome the opportunity to raise these issues and concerns with the Minister so that when the legislation is published, and debated by the Houses, it is fit for purpose.”

The Joint Committee on Agriculture and the Marine has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
