EU Affairs Committee to discuss Northern Ireland Protocol with Centre for Cross-Border Studies

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet with the director of the Centre for Cross- Border Studies Dr Anthony Soares to discuss the Northern Ireland Protocol in Leinster House tomorrow, Wednesday, 6 October.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 3 at 9.30am

Dr Soares is the convener of the Ad-hoc Group for North-South and East-West Cooperation and will be accompanied by other members of the group: Chief Executive of Longford Women’s Link Tara Farrell, Brexit Policy Officer of the Irish Environmental Network Aoife Ní Lochlainn and President of the Irish Association Stephen Douds.

Committee Cathaoirleach Joe McHugh TD said: “The Committee looks forward to hearing about the work of the Centre for Cross-Border Studies and the Ad-Hoc Group including the results of the Centre’s most recent quarterly survey on the conditions for north-south and east-west cooperation.

“The Committee is particularly interested in hearing about their recent work in connection with the Northern Ireland Protocol including their views on issues around the operation, impact and future of the Protocol.”

The Armagh based Centre for Cross-Border Studies is an independent organisation with charitable status. It seeks to promote and support cooperation across the Ireland-Northern Ireland border as part of the ongoing peace and reconciliation process, as well as cooperation between the island of Ireland and Great Britain, Europe and beyond.

The Ad-Hoc Group was set up to allow for meaningful consultation between cross-border civil society and regional, national and EU bodies on matters relevant to cooperation between Northern Ireland and Ireland, and between the island of Ireland and Great Britain.
